A Study on Urinary Tract Infection in Catheterized Patient

Abstract
A study on urinary tract infection in 46 patients with urinary catheter drainage was done at the Department of Urology, Chonnam University Medical School.
The following results were obtained:
1. Of 32 patients with sterile urine previous to catheterization, significant pyuria and bacteriuria were developed after removal of the catheter in 42.9%(3 of 7) of the patients on catheter drainage within 3 days, 75 (3 of 4) of the patients for 4 to 7 days, 91%(10 of 11) of the patients for 8 to 14 days and 90%(9 of 10) of the patients for more than 15 days respectively. The incidence of infection was 64% at 3 days and 90.5% at 7 days after catheter drainage.
2. Of 49 bacterial strains isolated by culture of urine, 95% was gram negative bacilli and the most common organism was Serratia (20 strains, 40.8%).
Most of Serratia(80%) and Proteus(62.5%) were resistant to all antibiotics.
